The Seiryo Campus, which includes the Institute of Development, Aging, and Cancer as well as the University Hospital, the School of Medicine, and the School of Dentistry, is located on a flat area close to the city center.
In the campus, cherry trees are planted here and there, and you can enjoy viewing cherry blossoms in the spring. Nishi Park, renowned for cherry blossoms, and the Hirose River, famous for a taro stew party, are in its vicinity. You can thus enjoy the blessings of nature even in the city center.
Co-ops in the School of Medicine and a restaurant in the School of Dentistry are available to our laboratory members. In the University Hospital as well, there are a number of shops, some which do not belong to the Shinyukai. Thus, within the Campus, you can enjoy a variety of pleasant facilities. Outside the Campus, you can walk to around-the-clock convenience stores, supermarkets, casual restaurants for students, and pubs. You can enjoy your life after work as well. The downtown area of Sendai, Kokubun-cho is also close by. If you take a taxi, you need to pay the base fare only, and if you walk there, its takes about 15 minutes. It is a good place to have a party.
Around the Seiryo Campus, you can easily find an apartment both for a single individual and a family. Many foreign students live in the International House in Sanjo-machi and Tohoku University House Sanjo (which was built one year ago), and you may have the opportunity to interact and become friends with them. New students are allowed to live in the University House Sanjo for one year with a monthly rent of about 10,000 yen. They can make friends and at the same time get accustomed to life in Sendai. The play area of the School of Medicine is just in front, and you can enjoy a football game with foreign students every week (application for playground usage is required).
(cars) To use the parking lot of the Institute of Development, Aging, and Cancer, you need to file an application. As long as your residence is 2.5 km or more away from the parking lot, your application will be accepted, in principle. A car is a necessity in local cities like Sendai, especially when going to shops in the outskirts. A car is very useful, but a principal cause of lack of physical activity.
(buses and subways) If you use Sendai City buses, the nearest bus stop is Daigaku-Byoin-Mae or Karei-Igaku-Kenkyusho. If you use the Sendai City Subway, you get off at Kita-Yonbancho Station, which is 15 minutes away on foot. Municipal transportation systems in Sendai radiate outward from the Sendai Station, so that they are inconvenient for traveling between places other than Sendai Station. We recommend use of a car to enjoy your days off.
(bicycles) A bicycle is useful for commuting, since the urban area of Sendai City is mostly flat. It can be used as a convenient means of transportation on your days off as well to go to see a baseball game (at Kleenex Stadium Miyagi), a football game (at Sendai Stadium), and so on. If you have enough time, energy, and patience, you may go as far as Matsushima.
